Netflix's embarrassing PR flop

Here's an example of a case where an organization immediately acknowledged its mistake and apologized for it. What do you think are some of the situations Netflix avoided by doing this?

  1. I heard about this on NPR this morning and completely forgot to follow up on it! Such an interesting PR goof to look at, thanks for posting!

In my opinion it was a pretty risky stunt for Netflix, considering it was its FIRST step outside the U.S. market. This will probably keep coming up in the news (future references and jokes) if it decides to expand into other markets. I don't know if an apology, no matter how well-timed, helps.

  2. Netflix has come a long way in the past couple of years. It is amazing that such a heavy-weight like Blockbuster has gone into bankruptcy protection because of the amount of business Netflix has taken away.
It was smart that this was addressed immediately because it could have blown up into an even bigger PR nightmare than it is. The amount of loyalty and trust from Netflix users could have wavered if this wouldn't have been addressed so quickly. I do think Netflix should have let the public and media know about the "fake documentary" they were shooting in order to keep everyone clear on what was going on. It is a shame that this PR mistake happened on Netflix's Canadian debut but I think it will still go on to become just as popular there as it is here.
