Politics In The Social Media Age: How Tweet It Is

I saw this story about politics and social media on NRP and thought I'd share. It talks about how many politicians are using social media to keep constituents and the media up to date.

The article says, "There is much talk among the panelists of 'authenticity' — the notion that a candidate who sends out her own online messages and interacts with voters electronically is perceived as more real than a candidate who doesn't, or who leaves the tasks up to staff members." In my opinion, it's very important for politicians to jump on the social media bandwagon. It's a quick and easy way for them to get their message out to a lot of people.

The article is pretty interesting and also gives some examples of "well-wired" politicians.

  1. Very interesting article Cassi! It is interesting how much attention has been given to social media during the 2010 mid-term election campaigns. The article makes a good point though that this will be perhaps the last year that so much attention and new interest will be given to Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube because it is likely that these outlets will have become such an “integral” part to campaigns in the future. I do think it is important for current politicians to utilize these website but it is also important for them not to completely rely on them as sources of success. It was very fascinating to read about the Alabama Governor’s race in which the candidate basically spent all his money on an elaborate social media campaign but ultimately failed in the end because of his lack of “groundwork.”

  2. This is a very interesting article. I absolutely believe that politicians should take advantage of every means to connect directly with their audiences especially through social media. Social media is sweeping the nation and it is used by millions, especially young people. Making young people feel more connected to politics could really sway votes toward the politician participating in social media.

Obviously you cannot only concentrate on social media to reach your audience, not everyone uses or is comfortable with social media, especially the older generation. Politicians still must make speaches, kiss babies, and shake hands.
