This type of thing (getting fired for a Facebook status) has been very common lately. I had a friend who commented about a former manager and was fired.
The place I used to work had some problems with employees posting information about clients. The employee was not fired, but the entire staff was given training on what was and was not appropriate to post on Facebook regarding work. The biggest issue was that they had posted information about clients, which was supposed to be confidential.
I think that companies should make it known what is and is not appropriate for their employees to post using social media. That way, employees will know what is expected of them before they accept a job position, and that way, if companies don't make their policies known, employees can't be fired for exercising free speech.
